Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation

oiko foto climatechange

Climate change is no longer a scientific curiosity, but a real threat to vulnerable developing countries. Climate change is the major, overriding environmental issue of our time, and the single greatest challenge facing sustainable development. It is a growing crisis with direct implications in areas such as economic, migration and resettlements, desertification, health and safety and food production.

OIKO LOGICA is currently active in the following areas of work:

1. Adaptation: We promote pro-poor and pro-growth adaptation that encourages climate-resilient economic development and sustainable livelihoods in the face of climate change. OIKO LOGICA provides in-depth research and analysis, supporting countries to integrate climate-related risks and opportunities into national planning and poverty reduction, while addressing the needs of more vulnerable groups such as women and indigenous people. This information needs to be translated into practical information in order to be used by policy and decision-makers in different areas for precautionary purposes.

2. OIKO LOGICA has formulated national climate change adaptation strategies for the governments of Namibia, Seychelles, Lesotho and Bhutan to improve their knowledge base on the effects of climate change, so as to develop and implement adaptation strategies.

3. Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation: About 20% of global greenhouse gas emissions are caused by deforestation. In least developed countries (LDCs), 62% of total emissions originate in land-use change, primarily deforestation. OIKO LOGICA provides technical assistance to formulate projects to decrease the CO2 emissions from developing countries by creating incentives for forest protection, while preserving livelihoods and ecosystems depending on the forests.

4. Enhancing participation in the Clean Development Mechanism: The CDM has the potential to bring significant foreign investment to poor countries, given that it costs less for industrialised countries to invest in emission reduction in developing countries than in their own one. At the same time, developing countries receive advanced technologies helping them in their own sustainable development efforts. However, so far the poorest countries have attracted only few CDM investors. OIKO LOGICA provides capacity building and technical support, to level the playing field and promote a more equitable geographic distribution of CDM projects.

5. Promoting Disaster Risk Reduction: In the last several years, there has clearly been an increase of natural disasters linked to extreme weather events resulting from climate change. OIKO LOGICA has provided technical assistance to the most disaster-prone countries, such as The Seychelles Island, The Mauritius Island, Cabo Verde and other Small Island States in the Caribbean (Saint Vincent and The Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago) in building their capacities to prepare for, mitigate and prevent natural disasters.

6. Mainstreaming climate change into poverty reduction development strategies: Climate change affects many sectors and needs to be integrated or "mainstreamed" into poverty reduction efforts to ensure sustainability. OIKO LOGICA has provided advice to strengthen the implementation of adaptation action plans on climate change and development (focused on mainstreaming) in vulnerable countries, such as Guatemala and Lesotho.

Our areas of work include:

  • Conservation agriculture, soil and nutrient management.
  • Water harvesting and use, improved water harvesting and retention (dams, tanks, pits, retaining ridges and water use efficiency (rural irrigation)) to address increasing irregularity of rainfall.
  • Degraded eroded lands and wetlands.
  • Increase food security through food processing technologies to reduce vulnerability.
  • Adaptation of agriculture (crop production, livestock) to reduce food insecurity and adapt to temperature and rainfall changes.
  • Building policy reforms to integrate climate change in sector policies (desertification, forestry, fisheries).
  • Genetic resources to adapt livestock, plants and crops to extreme climate.
  • Reducing post-harvest losses at the processing and other supply chain stages.

ange is no longer a scientific curiosity, but a meaningful threat to vulnerable development countries.  Today instead of one of many environmental and regulatory concerns, Climate Change is the major, overriding environmental issue of our time, and the single greatest challenge facing development & environmental planners and regulators in most of developing countries. It is a growing crisis with direct implications in areas such as economic, health and safety, food production, security, and other dimensions.

Changing weather patterns, for example, threaten food production through increased unpredictability of precipitation, rising sea levels contaminate coastal freshwater reserves and increase the risk of catastrophic flooding, and a warming atmosphere aids the pole-ward spread of pests and diseases once limited to the tropics.

OIKO LOGICA is active in the following Climate Change areas of work:

1.      Adaptation: Building on the National Adaptation Programmes of Action (NAPAs) and other national plans: in-depth research on the likely effects of climate change and reliable climate observation is essential for all adaptation measures. Furthermore this information needs to be translated into practical information for use by policy and decision-makers. OIKO LOGICA has supported developing countries such as Lesotho and Bhutan in the Himalayas, to improve their knowledge base on the effects of climate change, so as to develop and implement adaptation strategies.

2.
Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD): About 20% of global greenhouse gas emissions are caused by deforestation. In LDCs, 62 % of total emissions originate in land-use change, primarily deforestation. OIKO LOGICA provides advise to governements to decrease the CO2 emissions from developing countries by creating incentives for forest protection, while preserving livelihoods and ecosystems depending on forests.

3.      Enhancing participation in the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM): The CDM has the potential to bring significant foreign investment to poor countries given that it costs less for industrialized countries to invest in emission abatement in developing countries than at home. At the same time, developing countries receive advanced technologies helping them in their own sustainable development efforts. So far, however, the poorest countries have attracted only few CDM investors. OIKO LOGICA provides capacity building and technical support, to level the playing field and promote a more equitable geographic distribution of CDM projects.

4.      Promoting Disaster Risk Reduction: In the last years, there has clearly been an increase of natural disasters linked to extreme weather events, resulting from climate change. OIKO LOGICA has provided technical assistance to the most disaster prone countries, such as Cabo Verde and Small Island States in the Caribbean (Saint Vincent & The Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago) in building their capacities to prepare for, mitigate and prevent natural disasters.

5.      Mainstreaming climate change into poverty reduction development strategies: Climate change affects many sectors and needs to be integrated or "mainstreamed" into poverty reduction efforts to ensure sustainability. OIKO has provided advice to government in developing countries to strengthen implementation of action plan on Climate Change and Development (focused on mainstreaming) in the vulnerable countries, such as Guatemala and Lesotho.

OIKO LOGICA has provided the following services

OIKO LOGICA has worked with governments in vulnerable countries such as Bhutan in and Lesotho to formulate Climate Change adaptation support programs and Policies to mainstream “Climate-Smart” Agriculture to achivee greater consistency between agriculture, food security and climate change policy.

Resilience, efficiency, adaptive capacity and mitigation potential of the production system will be enhanced improving the following potential areas:

1) Soil and nutrient management

2) water harvesting and use, improved water harvesting and retention (Dams, Tanks, pits, retaining ridges, and water use efficiency (Rural irrigation) to address increasing irregularity of rainfall.

3) Pest and disease control

4) Degraded eroded lands and wetlands

5) Increase Food security through food processing technologies,

6) Adaptation of Agriculture (crop production, livestock), to reduce food insecurity,

7) Building policy reforms to integrate CC in sector policies,

8) upgrading early warning system

9) genetic resources to adapt livestock and plant and crops to extreme climate

10) harvesting processing and supply chain to reduce PHL.
